Working from home has many benefits – you are working in a more comfortable environment, you have easier access to food and drinks during the breaks, and you don’t even have to think about commuting since your office is literally a part of your home. Plus, since it truly is your office, you get to decorate it in a way that helps you be more productive, focused, and happy. So, to help you turn your regular office into a professional one, here are a few suggestions you should think about.

Find the power position

Don’t put your desk in the corner of the room – you need to present yourself as the authority figure in your office, so place it in the middle or slightly off the middle, facing the entrance or the area where the clients will be sitting. It will make you feel more secure because you’ll always be able to see when somebody enters the room, and it will make whoever is entering more confident because they will know who the person they are looking for is.

Make sure you’re comfortable

Since you will be spending a significant amount of time in your office, you should make sure you’re actually comfortable. Place your computer screen at eye level, position your keyboard and mouse in a way that allows you to use them without stretching your arms too far, and don’t skimp on the chair. Needless to say, you should enjoy your chair since you’ll be sitting on it quite a lot, so get a chair that is of high quality and ergonomically-correct. Also, keep the air fresh by opening your windows (when the weather is nice) and using air fresheners.

Create the right atmosphere

Your office should never be dark since the lack of light can only negatively affect your productivity by making you drowsy. Therefore, try to let in as much natural light as you can. Just don’t forget to position your computer screen in a way that prevents any harmful glare. You’ll still need some additional lighting, though, so invest in a good overhead lighting fixture and a nice table lamp for your late-night work. Finally, you can add some flare and character with quality decorative panels and make sure you have the most pleasant atmosphere for working.

Just because it’s a place where you conduct serious business, it doesn’t mean your office should be devoid of any personal details. Introduce a couple of homey accessories that will make both you and your clients feel more at ease. For example, you can use a pretty mug as a pencil holder, a decorative wastebasket, and of course, some family photos and children’s drawings to inspire you and keep you motivated.

Keep it neat

There is no way for you to work in a disorganized office, so make sure to keep it clean and neat at all times. Hide your computer cords with cord covers, have a designated place for coats and umbrellas, keep only the things you need on your desk, and get a bigger trash can in order to prevent any clutter. Having an organized and clean office is essential for your productivity, so don’t allow the mess to take over no matter how busy you are.

Use the color you love

Forget about grey or beige walls, paint them in the color that makes you happy and productive. If a calming color like light blue inspires you, by all means, make your office blue. In case you’re more into bright colors like lime green or orange, decorate your office using those colors. However, if you don’t have a favorite color, do your research about how different colors can affect your mood and choose the one that you think would fit your needs best.

Just because your office is a part of your home, it doesn’t mean it should be any less professional. Pay attention to the lighting and colors, invest in quality furniture, get rid of any distraction, and you will be more productive than ever.
